Paws

  • DOB:  06/15/2016
  • Requires another dog in home: No, but would love a friend
  • Okay with dogs of all sizes: Yes (not good with intact male dogs)
  • Okay with cats: Dog savvy cats
  • Okay with children under 12 years old: Unknown
  • Weight: 55 lbs
  • Requires a fenced yard: No, if committed to continue leash training
  • Note: dogs must always be leashed whenever outside of a contained area. Invisible/ underground fencing is not recommended for most rescue dogs.

I am calm and mellow 55 pound Stand Poodle gentleman. I likes to spend my days chewing bones and napping, and am very calm and quiet at home. I enjoy taking walks and do very well on the leash, although I do zig-zag when I catch a scent. There are so many new things for me to sniff that I can’t help but wander sometimes!

I’m very polite and don't jump on people but if I get overly excited, I have been known to give hugs. My people have been working hard on redirecting me so I don’t jump on people and try to give them special hugs – I am doing my best and will need more practice. I currently live with a large female German Shepherd and a cat. I do well with both, though I can be rambunctious when I play outside – we love chasing and playing in the yard. While I don’t need a fenced yard in my forever home, having a fenced yard and a friend will help me use up some energy. Otherwise a smart dog like me needs daily exercise, like long walks or play sessions in the yard.

Initially, I was rough with the foster’s cat but after a week of constant supervision and redirection to leave the cat alone, I ignore it. I would likely need a slow and proper into with any new cat, but can live peacefully with them as long as boundaries are taught.

I’m still unsure of new places, but as long as you remain calm, I will follow you, even if I’m feeling nervous. I do well walking around the neighborhood and haven’t shown any reactivity toward other people or dogs (though I get excited when I see dogs and want to approach them). When you stop walking, I’ll stop right along side of you!  We are working on basic commands as well as “go lay down” – I can’t wait to work on new things with you and show you how smart I am!

I’m not a fan of the kennel but I go in on my own to eat, and will go in when asked to "kennel". Once I’m in the kennel, I’m calm and quiet and lay down. I’ve only been in a covered kennel and do well with that, but will bark if it’s not covered. I sleep quietly all night in it. When I sleep, I let out cute little woofs in my dreams.

I also enjoy having a good bone to chew on, having appropriate chew toys is great so I don’t chew on something I shouldn’t. Although I might try to get a taste of any food left unattended and within reach. But I respond well to redirection. I’m potty trained and do great on a schedule. When I transition to a new home I will need to work on getting on a new routine again – we can do that together!

You will be surprised at how much I love to get brushed. I do need frequent grooming and my people spend time several times a week combing out my hair. You may find it strange, but I almost fall asleep standing up when they are brushing me!

Ready for an adventure – so am I! I can’t wait to meet you!

**Grooming - this dog's coat may have been neglected before arriving at Underdog and it can sometimes take months to get their coat healthy as poodles and poodle mixes require daily brushing.  Grooming appointments occur every 3 months and cost on average of $150 per appointment. Adopters should be prepared for such expenses. Underdog Rescue cannot guarantee the non-shedding or hypoallergenic qualities of this dog.

Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a  particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit.  Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.

ADOPTION EVENTS:

Adoption events are updated as the foster home RSVP's to attend. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. You may wish to consider applying and setting up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE:

The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.

FOSTER CARE:

All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application.

NUTRITION:

Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
